Red Bull Megaloop Enters a New Era of Innovation and Extremity
Wed 28th May, 2025 @ 3:00 pm
After eleven years in Zandvoort, Red Bull Megaloop moves to the KSN Noordwijk, the home base of kitesurfing legend Ruben Lenten and a spot with one of the most vibrant kite communities in the Netherlands. Sixteen men and six women will compete in this year’s edition and face extreme wind and sea conditions. The wind window is open from September 1st until November 14th.
First-ever Women’s Division
The female riders in kiteboarding will write history in this year’s edition, with the introduction of its first-ever women’s division. The progression in women’s kitesurfing has been massive, and the athletes are more than ready to take on Red Bull Megaloop’s extreme conditions. Six of the world’s best female riders will earn their spot via video submissions.
Dutch kiteboarder Zara Hoogenraad shares her thrill: “I’m so excited that the first ever Women’s Red Bull Megaloop is happening in the Netherlands, my home country. The level in women’s Big Air is progressing so fast, and I’m ready to show the extremity and power this competition is all about. That’s exactly what I live for!”
Innovation
The Red Bull Megaloop format introduces changes in 2025 to keep pushing the sport and its athletes. In the men’s division, riders are now limited to a maximum line length of 18 meters. The result: faster kites and even more extreme megaloops.
The heat format has also evolved. While four riders competed simultaneously in previous editions, riders will now face each other in 8-minute 1-vs-1 heats.
Dutchman Ruben Lenten, advisor in the Sports Committee, explains: “To see the Red Bull Megaloop move to my hometown Noordwijk, the exact beach where I invented the megaloop over 20 years ago, is something truly special. And with the new 18-meter line rule, we’re raising the bar and pushing riders to go big and critical. The kite angle is everything; this change will demand more control, risk, and even more progression. I can’t wait to see who finds that perfect balance.”
Video Submissions Open
The ten invited riders in the men’s competition will be announced soon. In addition, six female and six male riders will be selected from the video submissions to participate in the competition. Starting today, riders can submit their video here. The submission deadline is July 23.
