São Vicente Kitesurfing Holiday and Travel Guide

São Vicente

Cape Verde

Why Visit?

São Vicente is a wild and uncrowded destination that provides a taste of the true, authentic Cape Verde. The best time for kite surfing is from December to June, when the wind blows consistently almost daily. If you enjoy wave riding, Cape Verde is the perfect spot! In one bay, you can find a variety of conditions, including cross-shore, cross-onshore, and cross-offshore options, with waves of all sizes, as well as a small flat water area.

For absolute beginners, São Vicente offers excellent conditions for their first lessons. However, like all the Cape Verde islands, the presence of waves can make learning to swim challenging.

Wind and Weather

The trade winds in São Vicente blow steadily, usually at speeds exceeding 25 knots. The weather tends to be sultry from July to November, while dry heat prevails from December to June. During the colder season, average temperatures range from 18°C to 23°C. At the peak of summer, temperatures can rise between 22°C and 35 °C. In winter, water temperatures can drop to around 22°C; during summer, they typically range from 26°C to 27°C. The wind predominantly blows from the NNE, and most areas in São Vicente experience very few wind obstructions.

Getting Around

The most popular mode of public transport in Cape Verde is the “collectivo,” which consists of vans converted into shared taxis. A collectivo costs approximately 100 CVE per kilometre, while a private taxi can cost around 1,000 CVE per kilometre. Since taxis are significantly more expensive, agreeing on a fare with the driver before starting your journey is essential. Renting a car will cost you about 60€ per day, which can be pretty pricey. Additionally, buses are not always readily available, and you might find yourself waiting for up to a couple of hours for one to arrive in Salamansa.

Food and Drink

São Vicente is an island where you can find some excellent restaurants serving incredible fresh fish, among the best meals you can enjoy. Additionally, chicken, rice, and sandwiches are widely available. You can also find good beer and great wine from Fogo Island; the wine is tasty but pretty expensive for Cape Verde. While you’re here, try a traditional Cape Verdean drink called “Ponche de Mel,” a mixture of brandy, honey, lemon, and cinnamon. It’s a delightful drink to enjoy after your meal.

Nightlife

Mindelo, the island's central city, is known for its vibrant nightlife and is often referred to as the country's cultural capital. Here, you’ll find a variety of cool bars, making it an excellent place for a night out. The experience becomes even more exciting during Carnival, which takes place in mid-February and offers unforgettable festivities.

No Wind?

On calm days with no wind, there are several activities to choose from. You can go fishing; while fishing charters are available, they require a full day at sea and can be expensive, costing around €900. Trekking is also very popular in this area, with lovely trails around São Vicente. One of the most beautiful trekking opportunities is on Santo Antão Island, which is just under an hour away by boat. If you prefer to spend your day in the water, you might want to try surfing!

Internet

Most hotels offer Wi-Fi, but finding a reliable connection in Salamansa can be challenging due to the area’s relatively primitive infrastructure. As in many places, the best option is to purchase a local Cape Verdean SIM card while you are here.

Accommodation

You can contact the kite schools to find accommodations they recommend in Salamansa. Alternatively, consider exploring options in Mindelo, where you’ll find various places to stay. The Terra Lodge is the top hotel in the city, offering a fantastic view, although it is on the pricier side. Additionally, you might want to look into guesthouses in the Vanilla Residencial area.

Where are the Best Kitesurfing Beaches in São Vicente?

Salamansa is a wave riding spot and one of the most popular ones. Just in front of the main beach, the spot isn’t so good cause the wave breaks quite fast and the wind blows almost on shore. Go to the east-side to get the best waves, trust me!

Freestyle and freeride aren’t the best disciplines here due to the wave and choppy water. But you can enjoy some big jump thanks to the waves that create excellent kickers, but please watch out the distance to the shore as the wind is on shore.

  • Wind: On – Side on shore
  • Waves: in front of the beach. The best is further on the right.
  • Shorebreak: Some

Although very small, Baia das Gatas is the only permanent flat water, knee-to-waist deep spot on the Cape Verde islands and is not far from Salamansa; it’s a natural swimming pool. The spot’s tiny, two kites are going to be enough to fill up the pool.

  • Wind: Cross-shore
  • Waves: None
  • Shorebreak: None

Praia Grande is a wave spot for advanced kiters, and most of the spots around there are not easy to reach, the best and easiest way to get there is to either rent a car or ask to a taxi to come back and pick you up. Located 1.5 km northwest of the village Calhau, the beach is next to volcanic rocks of nearby Monte Calhau.

  • Wind: Cross – onshore wind
  • Waves: reef break from the right with 0.3 – 2.5m waves
  • Shorebreak: Yes
