At a Glance
The Edge has always been the benchmark for freeride and big-air performance within the Ozone range, and now the Edge VT Ultra X pushes that benchmark even higher. It takes the refined platform of the Edge VT, complete with its new platform, refined arc, and 16-point bridle, and builds it around a complete Aluula airframe, with a new super-light canopy material too.
That means an Aluula leading edge, five Aluula struts, and a new double-ripstop canopy material from Teijin that reduces the canopy weight by 17%. This adds up to a weight reduction of around half a kilo compared to the standard VT. The real magic, however, isn’t in the weight savings; it’s in the stiffness. Aluula delivers an incredibly rigid frame that resists distortion in even the strongest gusts, transforming the kite’s feel in high-wind and big-air conditions.
Like the VT, you’ll find increased canopy tension, especially along the trailing edge, for a flutter-free ride and ultra-precise steering. The 16-point bridle, inspired by the Vortex, allows Ozone to use a narrower leading edge without sacrificing stability. When combined, these features create one of the stiffest and most reactive freeride airframes on the market.
The VT Ultra X still carries that familiar Edge DNA, high aspect, fast, and incredibly efficient, but now it feels like it’s been forged from carbon fibre. It’s light, direct, and absolutely locked in.
Sizes: 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 15, 18m
Recommended Bar Setup: 45cm with 23m Lines
In the Air
Pick up the bar, launch the kite, and the difference is immediate. The Edge VT Ultra X feels taut, alive, and incredibly responsive. Steering is instant and crisp; there’s zero lag between input and action. The kite pivots beautifully through loops and transitions, giving you a sense of total connection and control.
When the wind’s howling, that stiff Aluula frame really comes into its own. There’s no jellyfishing, no canopy distortion, and no nervous twitching when overpowered; just a rock-solid, confidence-inspiring platform. You can charge into gusts and send it as hard as you dare, knowing the kite will stay perfectly composed.
The boosting performance is outrageous. The Edge VT Ultra X accelerates faster than the standard version and converts that extra apparent wind directly into vertical lift. The take-off is explosive but clean, and once you’re airborne, the hangtime feels endless. It’s the kind of float where you’re hanging above your friends, grinning mid-air, before gliding back down with buttery precision.
Loops are another highlight. The reduced weight and rigid structure mean the Ultra X whips around fast and catches you with confidence. It’s aggressive yet smooth, powerful yet predictable, perfect for riders stepping up their looping game or pushing into high-wind big air territory.
Despite its performance pedigree, the kite still retains Ozone’s hallmark usability. The bar pressure is balanced, offering plenty of feedback without it feeling like you’re in a wrestling match. Even when the wind hits 40 knots, the kite’s stability makes it feel controlled rather than intimidating.
Here is the key to the Edge VT Ultra X: it’s an incredibly easy kite to use; the performance is there in spades, but it’s so easy to unlock that it’s almost laughable. Jumping just feels intuitive, and the kite forgives minor errors, making it feel natural to fly. If you are into big air and want to go huge, knowing that the kite will have your back and not take you on any mid-air adventures, this kite is for you.
The Ultra X drives upwind effortlessly, tracking forward in the window like it’s on rails. In lighter winds, the reduced weight helps it stay in the air with minimal apparent wind, extending your riding time and keeping sessions alive when others are packing up. I actually had a couple of really fun light-wind foiling sessions with this kite and was impressed by its performance.
The top-end range feels limitless; if anything, you’ll be wanting 30 knots plus to really get this kite started, and I don’t think you will ever find the limit. It just keeps going bigger as the wind increases.
Overall
The Edge VT Ultra X takes everything great about the Edge VT and amplifies it. The lighter, stiffer Aluula frame enhances every aspect of performance: quicker response, greater stability, more efficient power, and unmatched confidence when it’s blowing hard.
If you ride frequently in strong or gusty winds, or if you’re chasing serious height and hangtime, the Ultra X is worth every penny. It’s not just a lighter Edge VT, it’s a more precise, connected experience that rewards committed riders with tangible performance gains.
In the Ozone lineup, the Edge VT Ultra X sits beautifully between the versatile Enduro V4 and the ultra-focused Vortex Ultra X, offering everyday usability with competition ability and big-air attitude.
The Edge has always been about smooth, accessible power and endless lift. In this Ultra X form, it delivers that same DNA, but with extra polish, precision, and a bucket load of adrenaline. It’s a kite that inspires confidence, begs to be sent skyward, and will make even seasoned Edge riders raise an eyebrow after the first boost.
If the Edge VT is the supercar of freeride kites, the Ultra X is the carbon-bodied track edition, with the titanium exhaust, lighter, faster, sharper, and thrilling every time you sheet in.
